Seminar Summary
In a regional energy transition strategy, replacing retired coal-fired power generation is vital to providing customers with the safe and reliable power they have come to expect. This is happening in real time for the San Juan Generating Station (SJGS) near Farmington, NM, with the implementation of the San Juan Solar 1 project.
After retiring the SJGS in 2022, the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) explored several replacement resources, including renewable generation such as wind, solar, and battery storage. San Juan Solar 1 is the first replacement asset sited adjacent to the retired coal plant. The project consists of 200MWac of solar and 100MW ac / 400 MWh of battery energy storage. D.E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI) acquired the San Juan Solar 1 project in early 2022 from Photosol and has been working diligently to bring it online since acquisition.
This seminar will tell the story of how San Juan Solar 1 came to be, lessons learned, and what the future holds for similar projects. As part of this seminar, we will get a glimpse into the successes and challenges of originating, developing, financing, and constructing the San Juan Solar 1 project.
Speaker
Noah Eckert is a Director of Project Management & Development at DESRI. He works with a myriad of internal and external stakeholders to pull development stage projects through to financing, construction, and ultimately operation. Over the past 15 years Noah has been involved in the development and commercialization of over 3GW of solar projects across the U.S. He holds an IMBA and MS in finance from the University of Denver and a BA in anthropology and geography from Northwestern University.
